Wednesday Poem

Tall as a white pillar in the sky
Made to climb, to soar, to fly
Make a wish upon a star
For now we say goodbye

Wednesday Poem

Lights fly past in the blink of an eye
Seasons change before I say goodbye
Where does time go when it dies?
Between the ocean and the sky?

Fear turned to joy

Last night I went on a bike ride around town. It was so nice out. As I was going around town, I went down this one street and there was a cute little red head girl outside with her father. When I rode past, she glanced up. Fear jumped to her face, I startled her. A moment later a smile spread across her face. She lifted her left hand and waved at me. I waved back. That was the highlight of the ride.

Wednesday Poem

I hear voices rise in exclamation
I see darkness roll on the horizon
My shadow walks ahead of me
Black shoes kiss the ground softly

Crickets chirp in a unanimous voice
Lights flash on and off without a choice
Four wheels race down an empty road
Going somewhere, I don't know

My destination lies beyond the bend
Green blades ready to defend
White posts stand facing the dome
Been at work, now i'm home

The Return of the Eagle

I just saw this movie the other day and this was the best part, this song playing during the credits.

The Spielberg Study Method

You may be a preacher, a Sunday school teacher, or just a parent struggling to keep up with your 7-year-old's questions about Scripture. At some time, you've probably felt that your ability to play that role fell short of your aspirations, your best intentions notwithstanding.

Because I have felt those things too, I was delighted to stumble across some new resources which gave my own teaching a little boost. Surprisingly, they weren't books about teaching, but thought-provoking books about filmmaking. Here's why they were so helpful: if your role requires you to understand great narrative, it may be beneficial to consider what it means to create great narrative.

These books on filmmaking increased my passion for narrative by helping me understand and appreciate God's genius for crafting us into his bigger story. What follows are some observations from these books. (read more)

Blue Jays in the Backyard

I was sitting in a chair outside reading when I noticed two Blue Jays in the backyard. One was female, the other male. The male one was flying all around the yard looking for food while the female just sat around. It was funny to watch. He would climb all over our cherry tree and grab cherries and place them between his two claws and use his beak to poke the cherry and shallow the food. It was fascinating to watch. They seemed to chew their food at alarming rate.

One time the male Blue Jay flew away and the female just chilled on the fence for around 5 minutes just sitting there minding her own business. Then all of the sudden the male Blue Jay would start squawking from somewhere and the female would fly off and go looking for him. Another time the male was sitting on the fence eating a cherry and the female was on the ground squawking up at him.

They seemed to not have a care in the world. They would just do there job because it needed to be done. One went and searched for food the other stayed home and both learned to communicate with each other.

"Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows." - Matthew 10:29-31

Wednesday Poem

11.59 with no time to waste
I must write something down post-haste
I grab a random photo that looks neat
And say a positive word like, mincemeat?

Disciple - Eternity

[Verse 1]
All that is behind me, this mess of life
Where out of nothing came a beautiful design [1 Corinthians 1:26-28]
Know that I've had but a taste of a deathless wine [Matthew 26:27-28]
So I give up the flame to the hands beside
And I'll be waiting

[Chorus]
Where the desert is covered in roses [Isaiah 35:1]
Where I can outshine the stars in a single day [1 John 2:25]
The face of God isn't hidden [Revelation 22:4]
When I wake into eternity [1 Corinthians 15:51-53]

Where the shadows are never discovered [Revelation 22:5]
Tears are nothing more than a memory [Revelation 21:4]
Death isn't alive any longer [Revelation 20:14]
When I wake into eternity

[Verse 2]
Now I know I see it in your eyes
You knew at some point that we'd have to say goodbye [Hebrews 9:27]
I looked for this moment for all my life
To be caught away in the arms of God [Philippians 1:23]
And I'll be waiting

[Bridge]
When I awake I'll see Your face
When I awake I'll see Your face [Revelation 22:4]

Wednesday Poem

Four colors paint the morning sky
I scan the horizon with my naked eye
The strokes come slow and steady
My canvas no longer white and ready

I start with red and blue
Followed by saturation and a bit of hue
Colors burst forth to start the day
It is no longer April, but May

Soon yellow and orange appear before me
From my palette they broke free
To join their family in the scene
Blended together with gray and green

Finally, my painting is complete
A few mistakes, but otherwise neat
Thank you God, for the heavens you made
A spectrum of colors arrayed

Wednesday Poem

Follow the path to the edge of the sun
Empty hands, broken, undone
Life is on the other side
The search has only just begun
